Cris Derksen with visuals by Adam CK Vollick X

Friday, November 27, 8 p.m.

FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre, 250 St. Paul St.

Join internationally celebrated Indigenous cellist/composer Cris Derksen for a live performance of original compositions in Robertson Theatre. Her instruments are loop pedals, a drum machine and, of course, the cello: its melodies are plaintive but catchy, growing in number as the song progresses. Performance visuals by Niagara’s own video artist Adam CK Vollick, whose dreamscape visuals will illuminate and reflect the sensory performance.

Juno nominated Cris Derksen is an internationally respected Indigenous cellist and composer. In a world where almost everything — people, music, cultures — get labelled and slotted into simple categories, Cris Derksen represents a challenge. Originally from Northern Alberta, she comes from a line of chiefs from NorthTall Cree Reserve on her father’s side and a line of strong Mennonite homesteaders on her mother’s. Derksen braids the traditional and contemporary, weaving her classical background and her Indigenous ancestry together with new school electronics to create genre-defying music.
All performances will be 60-70mins in length with no intermission.

The Christmas Tree by Norm Foster X

December 4 – 19, 2020

Directed by Marcia Kash
A tree lot. Christmas Eve. One man. One woman. One tree.

Who should get the tree?  Each gives reasons why they are the most deserving and each seems unaffected by the other one’s dilemma!  It’s a story filled with laughs, heartache, and good old-fashioned Holiday spirit.

The Foster Festival have teamed up with restaurants across the Region to provide unique and safe spaces for food and entertainment.
12 artist couples, performing a single reading each of Norm Foster’s one-act play, The Christmas Tree. With readings taking place at some of your favourite establishments in the City. That’s 12 readings of the same script performed by 12 separate artist couples. Wowza!

Everyone at The Foster Festival want to end this year on a high note – full of joy and laughter as we celebrate our favourite playwright and some very talented Niagara artists.

Top of mind is the safety of you, the actors and restaurant staff.

  • Each Artist Couple live in the same household so they don’t require physical distancing or masks.
  • Restaurants are spacing tables for 2 and 4 people. Seating is limited.
  • The Foster Festival and all our partner restaurants are following industry leading standards around health and safety.
