The Farthest Shore – a Celtic Celebration

News | January 30, 2017

Chorus Niagara and Artistic Director Robert Cooper kick off 2017 with THE FARTHEST SHORE – A CELTIC CELEBRATION in Partridge Hall at the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre in downtown St. Catharines, Saturday March 4th, 7:30pm. Following two sold out shows in the first half of the season, Chorus Niagara raises the bar with a glorious Niagara premiere of Welsh Composer Paul Mealor ‘s The Farthest Shore. Thrust into the international limelight with his beautiful anthem for the wedding of His Royal Highness Prince William and Catherine Middleton, Mealor has written an ambitious choral work for soloists, chorus, children chorus, brass quintet and organ, based on an Anglesey folk tale about a boy who was washed ashore in a storm.

“Mealor’s The Farthest Shore is a Chorus Niagara premiere and a ‘first’ for our singers…a choral drama and a dramatic Celtic folk-tale recounting an old man’s story of his mysterious youth.”, notes Artistic Director and Conductor Robert Cooper. “At a recent performance I conducted one audience member came up to me and said ‘It was so moving it brought tears to my eyes.’. I know our evening of Celtic choral delights, with our own charming Chorus Niagara Children’s Choir, the delightful Faherty de Menzes Irish Dancers, and vivacious Celtic Connection ensemble will surely bring a tear to the eye and a smile to the lips for all.”

This fulsome program features the 100 voices of Chorus Niagara, the Chorus Niagara Children’s Choir, Chorus Niagara’s Side-by-side High School Chorale, soloists Maeve Palmer (soprano), Ryan Moilliet (baritone), Michael Driscoll (treble) accompanied by Celtic Connection (Gail Poulsen, Doug Miller, Deb Braun & Anne Adams) the Chorus Niagara Brass Quintet (headed by Neil Spaulding) and an appearance by Irish Dancers from the Faherty de Menzes Dance Academy.

With the Celtic theme firmly in place we will explore, in Canada’s 150th birthday year, our own strong Celtic roots with all the trimmings!

Chorus Niagara Children’s Choir is sponsored by Henley Honda | Subaru of Niagara.
