River Lions Here to Stay

News | May 25, 2017

Niagara River Lions announced that they have come to a three-year lease agreement with the Meridian Centre in downtown St. Catharines.

The news comes after many rumours circulated with fans questioning where the River Lions would be playing for the seasons to come.

“I am personally pleased to come to a long-term agreement with the City of St. Catharines and SMG to continue playing basketball at the Meridian Centre. We know that the Meridian Centre is one of the top venues in our league and helps in providing the exciting atmosphere at River Lion Games. We look forward to bringing a winning and championship calibre team to the court in the years to come,” commented River Lions Founder & CEO, Richard Petko.

Owned by the City of St. Catharines and operated by SMG Canada ULC, the Meridian Centre has proven to be a state of the art facility in the heart of St. Catharines, and River Lions basketball has only added to that.

“Establishing a professional sports franchise is all about the hard work and dedication of players and staff. And that same hard work and dedication is what makes the Meridian Centre tick,” continued Ken Noakes, General Manager of the Meridian Centre. “It is because of the efforts of these two organizations that we will be able to continue this partnership with the Niagara River Lions of the National Basketball League of Canada. We can’t wait for tip-off for season 3!”

Since announcing the franchise in April 2015, the River Lions have worked hard to form partnerships in the Niagara Region, build their fan base, and create a strong sense of community.

Niagara Regional Chair, Alan Caslin noted, “The River Lions are very invested in our communities and are making important contributions in the sports world but also are extending their reach to support youth and a number of organizations across the region. With a new agreement with the Meridian Centre in place, I look forward to the upcoming years of exciting basketball and building on the strong existing community partnership with the Niagara River Lions.
