As Ontario reopens, the Gallery at 13th Street is thrilled to present its new exhibition entitled REOPENING! featuring three talented artists: Niagara-based Ronald Boaks and Floyd Elzinga, and Toronto-based artist Kimberly Joy Danielson.
Working in a variety of media with a focus on abstraction, the most common elements that Ronald Boaks incorporates in his works are colour, balance, wit and whimsy. These compelling two and three-dimensional works are created through a Modernist, Romantic lens. This exhibition will showcase new works from his Spirit Arise series as well as past works to illustrate Ronald’s diverse body of work.
Currently working in the Niagara Region, sculptor Floyd Elzinga is inspired by natural elements including rotten stumps, broken branches, invasive species, and ravaged trees. His work is rooted in the dichotomy between the natural and cultivated. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax. Floyd cleverly employs natural and non-traditional sculpting materials, especially steel, to create rural landscape narratives. Initially drawn to steel due to its malleable, plastic and forgiving nature, Floyd continues to be persuaded by the way light plays off the etched and scratched surface.
A graduate from OCAD University, Kimberly Joy Danielson finds inspiration in the bold Scandinavian palette, handicraft and textile traditions of her cultural heritage. Her vibrant and sculptural paintings also reference her lifelong career as a psychoanalyst and psychiatrist and her love of the natural world. Danielson states “the paintings emerge through a process that reminds me of the psychoanalytic process which not only draws on the unconscious but creates an intersubjective space where the painting acts on me and I act on the painting.”
REOPENING! runs from Saturday, June 27, 2020 to Saturday, Aug. 1, 2020.
While we are not yet able to hold an official opening reception, guests are welcome to view the exhibition throughout the month.
