At the Pen Centre, “charge it” has taken on new meaning. Located near the Hudson’s Bay Company store, there is a convenient charging station for electric cars, so while tourists and locals alike do their shopping, their cars can get a boost.
Alex Pedersen, CAA Niagara Public Relations Specialist, reports that there are 14,000 electric cars already on the roads in Ontario and that one percent of new sales are electric. Those numbers will quickly grow.
Alex says that The Pen Centre is now equipped with four Level 2 electric vehicle charging stations. The chargers are accessible at all times to visitors of the Pen Centre. Charging costs $1.50 per hour, billed to the nearest minute (based on total connection time).
Currently, there are two types of charging stations. Level 2 charging stations provide up to 30 km of range per hour of charging (50 km in 90 minutes). They are compatible with all models of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. Typical locations are at shopping centres, hotels, restaurants, commercial buildings, public parking lots and curbside on city blocks.
Fast charging stations provide up to 300 km of range per hour of charging (50 km in 10 minutes). They are compatible with vehicles such as Nissan Leaf, Kia Soul, Mitsubishi, Chevrolet Bolt, Volkswagen e-Golf and Hyundai. Typical locations are at rest areas, fast food restaurants, service stations, and near transit corridors.
One of the key players in the project, FLO, is Canada’s most comprehensive and reliable electric vehicle (EV) charging ecosystem. It fulfils EV drivers’ charging needs wherever they may be—at home, at work or on the go—by ensuring a consistently simple and seamless experience.
FLO operates a network of more than 4,000 charging stations across Canada. All FLO stations are monitored in real time to guarantee reliability and service quality. FLO provides its members with a 24/7 support line for immediate assistance at charging stations.
EV drivers must be FLO Network members to use the charging stations. They can use either their FLO membership card or the FLO mobile app (available for iOS or Android) to activate stations and pay for charging sessions with credits transferred to their online FLO account. Users can create their account online at flo.ca/signup.
The FLO mobile app for iOS and Android enables members to find stations, pay for sessions and track usage directly from their smartphone. The FLO mobile app is available free of charge from the App Store and on Google Play.

CAA Niagara supports moves to make vehicles more fuel efficient, including the development of EVs. They notice a growing need for electric charging stations in Niagara and are proud to be able to help provide this service at the Pen Centre, the crossroads of Niagara.
Once the fourth largest mall in Canada, the Pen Centre is the largest mall in the Niagara Region, having opened in 1958.
